My sister, Emily, and her boyfriend, Austin, came from California for our belated Christmas celebration. I traveled with them to visit friends and family, serving as the unofficial dog nanny.
We drove on icy roads through the dark to a friend's house deep in the woods. We drank beers and fired air rifles off the back deck, the shots echoing deep into the darkness. The next day, we woke to the first views of the frozen lake in the quiet of the morning.
A whirlwind weekend, just missing a blizzard, full of gifts and laughter, music in sunken living rooms, and the softest, fluffiest puppy fur.
